OW's Menus

Post by stucuk »

As a long term project i would like to replace all of the menu's (not including the in-game interface). One benefit being that they would be made to scale to any resolution rather than being fixed at 800x600. Another being that the OW Menus don't look all that great (The US/RU/AR in-game interfaces look fine).

Though im not great at designing interfaces... can never get the window bit right.

The following is a concept i made in about 24 hours.

Anyone have any concept ideas for a more modern look to OW's menu's?

How about backward compatibility for older mods? I guess you are going to implement something that checks if the mod either has new or old interface included.

for a concept there only really needs too be 2. How the main menu looks (Things like Options will be "Built into" the main menu bit) and how the menus that take over the whole screen look like the multiplayer lobby.

What about Delphi? Delphi is what Original War was programmed in.

The template you presented would suit the game well. Just need to adjust some things or make some ornaments and the game's menu would be both refreshed and functional. Also, we should compose some new, fitting background image - to make it look neat and quite modern. A new layout gives us some new opportunities, which may be reforged into lots of advantages (of course whereas the basic OW style and form).

My humorous idea:

Better would be a new menu, like in the first post or in a post Antitheus.

Edit: I've done some thinking how to enhance your idea and that's what I came with:

This is really good!
Epic background, subtle faction logos that match the rest and title in good ol' OW font.

It would be nice if you could have such logos not only in faction list but also in mod browser.

@Lengorio: It is skyrim.

@Creative: The comparison image is what the latest build's menu looks like.

@Antitheus: That looks very good. The US/RU images showing up when you move over the campaign text is a very good idea. Where did you get that background image from?(I think iv seen it before)

Also in re-guards to fonts, we would need to use Unicode fonts that support most of the languages (Japanese currently use some different fonts anyway so, they can have some generic crap looking one :P ). Unfortunately most fonts only support the basic letters (English... well Latin if you want to be specific).

P.S Everything used kinda needs to be free for commercial use given that the idea is that its bundled with OW which Bohemia is selling.

@Szymiew: Do you mean the in-game mod browser?

Source, 2. It kicks ass imho. I was just googling 'Siberian landscape" or something similar. Added some color & gradient masks, few contrast adjustments + made some custom blending. Too bad almost all good quality landscapes are copyrighted. It would be cool if the author (Ben Kopec) would allow us to use it.

Anyone know if ARMA 3 has any similar terrain? Since its owned by Bohemia i see no problem with ARMA 3 screenshots being used in OW. The only problem i see is that screenshots people take normally include roads/buildings.
